Why we built it
The alarm is the excuse. The phone is the problem.
Nobody decides to spend forty minutes scrolling before sleep. It happens because the phone is already in your hand — you picked it up to set an alarm. Take the alarm away and the habit loses its anchor.
The last thing at night
A phone on the nightstand is a phone in the bed. Every piece of sleep advice says keep it out of the bedroom, and everybody keeps it there anyway — because it is the alarm.
And the first in the morning
Studies show that the first time you give in to a distraction starts off a chain reaction that will put you in failure mode for the rest of the day. Alternatively, if you stay diciplined you will find much more power to overcome distractions and be more productive.
Light before sound
Optionally, for a softer wakening, the room brightens for up to half an hour before anything plays, so you surface gradually.
